aboitiz-2019-aTrue to its mission of improving the quality of education and lives of underprivileged yet deserving students, Aboitiz Foundation partnered with Dualtech in providing scholarship for 20 scholars from Bohol, Aklan, Catanduanes, and Camarines Sur.

Dualtech presented the first batch of scholars to Aboitiz Foundation who are currently enrolled in the 2-Year Electromechanics Technology course. In this program, the scholars take the basic training in Electrical, Mechanical, and Electronics and will continue with an intensive training in Dualtech’s partner companies under the Dual Training System program which it pioneered.

“This is a good gesture from you [Aboitiz Foundation] and we consider this a very strategic assistance in order to help the scholars.” Mr. Arnolfo Morfe, Dualtech’s President said. Addressing the scholars, he challenged them to give back the opportunities which they received from Aboitiz Foundation. “As a scholar, you have to prove it now. The reality is you become a scholar all the time and you have the chance to prove that you are worthy of scholarship. Later on, help others to become better as well. You have to pay it forward”

Ms. Maribeth L. Marasigan, First Vice President and COO of Aboitiz Foundation, shared that the foundation has given bigger priority to its education program and has helped many scholars through scholarship. This year, Aboitiz Foundation added its number of scholars with the trainees from Dualtech Center. “We feel the alignment of Aboitiz Foundation and Dualtech in our education goal. At Dualtech, its educating through work which is also our objective in bridging education to employment.”

“Here [Dualtech] you will learn not just skills but also the values because it is very important. Skills you can learn but you have to live with the values especially when you work at Aboitiz” She added.

Maribeth explained the important core values of Aboitiz which are also important for the scholars to live with - Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork, and Responsibility. “It is where we are and what we are today because of these core values we shared and that is something that you need to imbibe while you are here and when you work.”

The scholars were invited to reflect on the famous reality show’s tagline “Dream, Believe, and Survive”. “Through Aboitiz Foundation’s partnership with Dualtech, you will have better opportunities to discover new skills and to hone your abilities but with that special opportunity is a special responsibility to take part in our advocacy.” As they awarded the scholarship grants, the scholars would form part of Aboitiz effort to co-create sustainable communities. “We hope you imagine better lives for yourselves, the families and communities you belong to. Help each other while you take this journey”

Four scholars took the opportunity to share about their experiences back in their provinces and how the scholarship would help them.

Jeson Dimas, 27-ALS graduate from Aklan, used to work as a construction helper and farmer at the very young age to earn a living. It was a difficult situation. He was left with no choice but to set aside school for work. “Namulat kami na hindi nag-aaral”. After many years of hard living, he realized the need for education and training to attain a more secured and stable job. Fortunately, he heard of Dualtech from a community coordinator in Aklan and grabbed the chance to change his fate. “Maganda po sa Dualtech kasi dito ko natutunan ang disiplina at pagtutulungan. Dito ko rin po napalawak ang aking pananampalatay sa Diyos.” His sheer determination qualified him to be one of the scholars of Aboitiz Foundation. “Nagpapasalamat po ako ng marami dahil isa itong opportunity para sa kagaya namin na nangangailang ng tulong para makatapos ng pag-aaral. Pangarap ko din po sana na pag nakatapos ako, yung mga bata doon sa amin ay iiencourage ko na magtapos ng pag-aaral,” he said.
